I do this feature from time to time. There were two horses that caught my eye over the last few weeks, who I will highlight here.
I have been really impressed with Mary Frances since taking a mares maiden hurdle at Limerick on 18-3-17. I thought Mary Frances was running a really lovely race at Thurles on 9-11-17. On that occasion, Mary Frances was going to be a very respectable third. I thought Sean Flanagan asked Mary Frances for a jump when it was not really necessary. Mary Frances took a heavy fall on ground that was probably too quick. I really liked that run at Thurles. Mary Frances followed up at Thurles with a really good run behind Burren Life in a novice hurdle. Mary Frances was really well backed from 20/1 into 7/1. Mary Frances finished second beaten eleven lengths. Mary Frances is now rated 112. I think Mary Frances from a mark 112 has a handicap hurdle well within her capability. I think on the testing ground maybe at Limerick over Christmas Mary Frances may just get us the Christmas expenses.
Gordon Elliott has done a remarkable job with Poormans Hill having run up a sequence of four wins on the bounce. The race that Poormans Hill won at Down Royal on 4-11-17 looks to my eyes to be a good race. Poormans Hill held off a really well backed as well as a probably well-handicapped horse in Lasoscar. Gordon Elliott decided to turn Poormans Hill out three days later under a penalty, Poormans Hill just failed by a neck. Poormans Hill then ran a blinder in the Troytown finishing fourth beaten just over eleven lengths. Poormans Hill to me looks an ideal candidate for the Paddy Power chase over Christmas at Leopardstown on 27-12-17. Poormans Hill will need to go up a few pounds to get into the Paddy Power. I note Poormans Hill is entered at Fairyhouse on 3-12-17. Poormans Hill may well win this and take dead aim at the Paddy Power. It is worth noting that Gordon Elliott produced Noble Endeavor by placing in the Troytown to win the Paddy Power last season.
